Most of this info should be found in a Scots name book found in most libraries. Mac and Mc means "son of" and Nac and Nc means "daughter of". There are some names carried on that do start with Nc. So McDonald means son of Donald. Because the McDonalds were a clan, they orginally lived in a particular area and just like us in the US then moved around. There were other clans usually associated with the McDonalds so I assume that meant they lived near each other. I believe the McDonalds had a king while the other aligned clans didn't. That part may need to be verified but if it's true maybe your clan had a king too.
