Mateer is the Anglicised version of the Irish
"Mac an tSaoir"(also MacIntyre in Northern Ireland,..MacAntire, MacEntire, MacAteer, MacCateer.. etc.) and translates as Carpenteer and Freeman; "son of a craftsman"
(saor in Irish means a mason,carpenter and also freeman) About Dublin this name has been translated "carpenter"
