There are several books, manusripts, historical annals that might be helpful. Be ware of those who would have you pay for information or membership(s) to clubs or societies that would insist you accept a version of their histories.

Two good references I recommend are:

1. Anglo-Norman Advances into the SW Midlands of Ireland BY: George Cunningham

2. Clans and Families of Ireland and Scotland
An Ethnography of the Gael A.D. 500 - 1750
BY: C. Thomas Cairney, Ph.D,

Both are more concerned with real history vs lore and/or talltales.

I hope this helps.

I am researching Cunningham's from Ireland. Joseph was born in 1786 in PA. His parents had immigrated by that date. I have very little to go on, and am at a stone wall. The common family surnames are William, Lewis or Louis, John Lewis,
Henry.
One little family oddity, was that three or more of them named their horses Pigeon. Joseph raised thoroghbred horses in Kentucky, but the family consisted of farmers, or blacksmiths.

Any help at all, would be appreciated.
