Significance of strike marks in last name My last name starts with McC; my father always put two strike marks under the small 'c' (lifting it to the level of the Capital 'C'. I have heard that there is a significance to these strike marks. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks Bob It is a stylistic flourish, and has no significance to the meaning. Mc or Mac simply means "son of", and there is no significance to whether it is spelled Mc or Mac. In the 18th century "Mac" names were often written with an apostrophe replacing the "c", as in M'Donald. Mark |
