I am looking for any info on my greatgrand parents John Lavin(1825), Anna Mcdonough (1835). residence in Sligo before coming to America in the middle 1800's. John's mother's first name was Mary, (1790). Do not know father's name. Brothers, Thomas(1820), Peter(1830), and Andrew (1836). Anna's parents I donot know either name. Thank you

Lavin has the origin of Irish or French.

If its Irish, then it was used for the descendants of son of the prince. Seems your greatgrand parents were quite royal.

Its other spelling variants are lavins, laven, laffan etc.

The Lavins were definetly of IRISH heritage and of this there is no question. I personally believe that they are a branch of the Mac Dermutt'sof Co Roscommon but there is still a bit of an argument about this. Good luck

Dear Karen.

I have just noticed that you are looking for Lavin ancestors, as am I. From reading your notice posted on 3rd May,2009, there "may be" a similarity in our searches. I am looking for my Great Grandfather, Thomas Lavin b. c1820 in Sligo, whose father's name was also Thomas and his mother's name was Mary Dolley. He arrived in Australia in 1852. I have had no knowledge of siblings, but my father once told me that we had cousins in America. Given the details that you have provided, it is possible that we could be related.
