Family surname of Johnson

I read on a geneology website that the name Johnson actually may have come from Johnston. There was a family crest and I wondered if it was close to the truth. I'm sure I have a background from England, but back in the 1700's-1800's I'm not sure exactly if it was Scotland, Ireland, or definitely England. I'd appreciate any help.
