My name in Irish

Hello. My surname is McGuone and I wish to change it to the Irish spelling. I can't find much information on the name as it is very rare. The site I found is [www.smo.uhi.ac.uk] which says my name is Mac Eoghain in Irish. My father told me our name in Irish is Mac Eoin so is that the shortened version of Mac Eoghain? I really want to make sure I have got the right name. I hope someone can help me as it is very important to me. Thanks

McGuone

Does anyone know the translation of Nicole Howey into Irish

Nicole
August 23, 2007 11:12AM

PLEASE PLEASE LISTEN,
your name in Irish is not Mac Eoghain or Mac Eoin (incidently they are not shortened forms or varients of each other, but totally different names).
Your name is WITHOUT DOUBT a varient of the Irish name Goan/McGoan/McGowan....a native Irish clan belonging to Co Cavan and surrounding areas. The name means 'son of the smith' and many have changed their name to Smith and Smyth.

Your name in Gaelic is therefore as follows....

Mac an Ghabhann male form
pronounced Mak un Owan

Mhic an Ghabhann married female form
pronounced Vik un Owan

Nic an Ghabhann unmarried female form
pronounced Nik un Owan

This is the accepted and standard forms, but the name has undergone a little change (within the Gaelic language). Therefore the more modern form shown below is equally correct (and closer to the English sound. YOUR CHOICE!.

Mac Gabhann pronounced Mak Owan/ Mag Owan
Mhic Ghabhann pronounced Vik Owan
Nic Ghabhann pronounced Nik Owan

Please note, in this modern Irish varient form, the male form does NOT have the letter 'h' following the G.
If you want me to translate your first name into Irish Gaelic I will be happy to.

November 12, 2007 02:33PM

john casey- Seán Mac Cathasaigh or Seán Ó Cathasaigh.

loretta- Labhraín

Courtney- Cuirnán

Nicole Howey- Nicoilín Ní hEochaidh

Samantha- Somhairlín is the best equivalent and it's just a gaelicisation not a translation. Noble is a french name and it's Irish equivalent adjective is uasal but that makes no sense as a name.

McGourty- Mac Dhorchaidh

Lee- Mac Laoidhigh or Mac an Leagha

Ian Watterson- Watterson is English and might be derived from Walter's son so you could Gaelicise it as Mac Ualtar. Ian is Eoin or Seán. I christian you Eoin Mac Ualtar. Enjoy.

Kevin Smyth- Prionsias gave it to you- Caoimhín Mac an Ghabhann

Selina - derived from the ancient Greek for moon. Gealach is the Irish for moon but I wouldn't call my baby that.grinning smiley

howe- is an English name. Irish synonyms are Hoey or Hough.

You can't translate names into or out of Irish. Names don't work that way. You can make up an Irish equivalent like I did for Ian but an Irish girl named Selina Dolan would be called Selina ní Dhuláin in school. It's a lovely name, why change it.

Has anyone came across this female name - Cónagh.

it appears irish but I don't know where it is derived from.

I imagine the 'gh' is an anglicism or modernisation of the older gaelic.

If anyone has heard of this name for a girl or knows its derivative, I would really love to hear from you

Hello,
I borrowed a book from the library to maybe help find out about my heritage. My great grandparents moved over to here (australia) from Ireland and I'm having trouble finding information. The way I worked it out my surname should be Mac Mathuna is that correct? and would my great grandparents have changed there name from the traditional to a different translation?
